Robert Adams is an American photographer who was born in 1937. He is known for his black and white photographs of the American West, specifically the landscapes and urban developments in California, Colorado, and Oregon. Adams attended the University of Redlands in California and later earned a PhD in English from the University of Southern California. He began his photography career in the late 1960s and published his first book of photographs, "The New West," in 1974. Adams is also a writer and has published several books on photography and environmental issues. He has received many awards throughout his career, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 1994. Today, his photographs are highly regarded for their poetic and poignant commentary on the impact of human activity on the natural world.
